There’s something about a new year that entices people to want to have a fresh start. I’ve been thinking a lot about people this week and how the little things we do on a day to day basis can impact someone so greatly. Something I hear frequently from talk show host Ellen DeGeneres is “be kind to one another”. The bible claims that the greatest commandment is to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind and, love your neighbour as yourself.” – Luke 10:27. These two quotes seem pretty self explanatory to me. The world would be a better place if we all followed the ‘golden rule’ of ‘treat others the way you want to be treated’, would it not?
Last night Joel and I went down to the states and on our way through the border, met a woman that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about. “What are you lovely people up to tonight?” She asked us, smiling. It was refreshing to be greeted by someone like that. These days it seems that everywhere you go most people are too busy to take a moment to smile at someone and love them. Seeing the border guard and how her one minute of pleasant, happy conversation shifted my evening, made me think. Is it really that simple? Think of how many people we each connect with on a daily basis, whether personal or just in passing. Whether it’s a smile at the gym, holding a door open for someone, letting someone go ahead of you in line, these are all things that I truly believe can show people light in a world filled with darkness. So that is my new year’s challenge for me and for anyone else out there reading this: be kind to one another and love your neighbour as yourself.
